Double gold for Cowichan’s Zuback at wrestling nationals

Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club standout Brayden Zuback won double gold at the 2026 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Grande Prairie April 24 to 26.

Competing in the U17 51kg freestyle division, Zuback faced the top ranked wrestler from Ontario in the semi-final and in the closing seconds, he found a way to get the win. He carried the momentum on to the final and claimed the national title.

“Brayden truly embodies our club motto: 1, 2, No Quit,” said his proud coach and dad, Nick Zuback. “That was a championship performance.”

In the Greco Roman competition, Zuback excelled once again, winning his second gold.

“It was incredible to see Brayden capture double gold — his work ethic and commitment are really paying off,” said coach Zuback.

Cowichan’s Elyssa Olson took bronze in the U17 73kg freestyle division despite an injury that ultimately forced her withdrawl from the Greco Roman competition.

Five of seven Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club athletes competed in the Greco Roman competition with Zuback and his gold medal leading the way. Olson and Lyla Boylan, who went 3-2 in her matches, were unable to participate due to injuries sustained in the freestyle competition.

Ingram-Reid took silver in the U17 73kg event and Greenwood earned bronze in the U19 69kg event.

Two more wrestlers finished just off the podium.

Skyler Bilot (U15 44kg) had an exceptional tournament, according to her coach, securing multiple wins against larger opponents and finished fourth in a deep and competitive bracket.

Aoife Mann (U17 61kg) also delivered a strong showing, earning several key victories on her way to a fourth-place finish as well.

“As a group, our athletes showed resilience, growth, and the ability to compete with the best in the country,” said the coach.
